Morning harvest of golden cucumbers, jalapenos and cayennes

We hope – in the event of any future lockdown, local or otherwise – that we will be able to continue supporting you with healthy, organic fruit veg and fungi.

Your boxes this week

Small boxes this week contain a cauliflower, pointed peppers, bananas and carrots, onions and ‘Pink Fir Apple’ potatoes.

Medium+ boxes have the same plus aubergine, savoy cabbage and a variety of UK apples.

Gardener’s boxes this week contain flat mushrooms, bananas, oranges, avocados, limes, kiwis and a mango.

Shop news

New season Spanish mandarins make an appearance as do large vine tomatoes. We’ve also added purple sprouting broccoli (which should be available in subscribers’ weekly boxes next week).

We still have the delicious doughnuts from Cegin Yve as well as the Fairtrade and organic range of chocolates, drinks and other goods from The Dragon’s Garden.
The avocados are expensive as they are difficult to get hold of at the moment – sorry about that.

Garden news

We have quite a bit of our own produce in the shop for next weekend – basically anything the deer couldn’t get to or didn’t want.

We have green cayenne chilli peppers ready for harvest as well as our jalapenos which are getting bigger and taste amazing roasted with a cheesy stuffing as a side dish. We are also hoping our quince tree will have ripe fruit on it by next weekend so quince is in the shop too. Come on sunshine!

Squashes are also ready – ‘Anna Swartz’ hubbard and the ‘Uchiki Kuri’ varieties – available in different weights. We have some larger squash curing at the moment so get in touch if you want a big one.

We’ve only a few of the golden Indian ‘Poona Kheera’ cucumbers available and only a dozen eggs in the shop this week so if you like them you’ll have to be quick.

Your boxes this week

Small boxes this week contain chestnut mushrooms, large vine tomatoes, ‘Red Devil’ apples, rainbow carrots, onions and ‘Alouette Red’ potatoes.
Medium+ boxes have the same, also pattipan (a small summer squash), ‘Chioggia’ stripey beetroot and bananas. Large boxes also have fresh shiitake mushrooms from Bethlehem.
Gardener’s boxes this week contain chestnut mushrooms, sweet potatoes, figs, bananas, avocados, oranges and a pineapple.

Shop news

We are now trialling doughnuts from our customer Cegin Yve – Yve’s kitchen. We are keen to support this local bakery so, if you ordered doughnuts this week, please do let us know how they were when they got to you.
This product is cooked fresh but is best eaten on the day so please tell us how well they travel.

New products in shop

We have our first Thai product in the shop this week as we feature lemongrass.

Garden news

Our broad bean plants are now emerging and the leeks are looking lush. Chillis are finally ripening and the squash have been brought indoores to cure. We hope they’ll all be in boxes or the shop soon.

Brexit update

Sorry to bring you down with this but we thought a brief update on the global situation might be of interest to you.
Our suppliers of the organic goods grown outside the UK tell us they believe we should still be able to obtain plenty of goods up to January 1st.

Regardless of whether the government is breaking international law or not.

This comes from the assumption that it will be impossible for the UK to secure the borders as needed – neither the infrastructure or the personnel are in place. So the thinking is that food trucks will likely be waved through as if nothing had changed.

There are other implications; for customs, phytosanitary certificates (confirming the food is pest-free and meets the UK’s plant health requirements) and tariffs. They are considering these and they assure us they are doing all they can to keep those administrative costs down.. However there may be implications for the cost of food in the future.

Your boxes this week

Small boxes this week contain brocolli, sweetcorn and bananas alongside ‘Triplo’ potatoes, carrots and onions. They also have mini cucumbers as a treat (Small boxes only).

Medium+ boxes have the same, plus chestnut mushrooms, squash and some ‘Discovery’ apples from the Borders.

Gardener’s boxes this week contain the sweetcorn, bananas and chestnut mushrooms and avocado, mandarins, lemons and a Galia melon.

It’s a bit of a squash and a squeeze!

We have 2 types of squash in our boxes this week. Medium boxes contain the beautiful ‘Harlequin’ squash, whilst our Large boxes have the ‘red Onion’ squash.

What’s the deal with naming food after other food anyway? Last week it was ‘Pink Fir Apple’ potatoes, now this!

Tres hermanas

Meaning ‘three sisters’ in Spanish, the term refers to growing squash, sweetcorn and beans together.
The ‘3 sisters’ method is companion planting at its best, as the three plants grow symbiotically alongside each other.

This arrangement deters weeds and pests and enriches the soil at the same time which helps the plants thrive together. Isn’t Nature wonderful?

Nothing Fawlty with our Basil!

The basil in our polytunnels has done so well we are giving everyone a bunch of it in their boxes.
That is, everyone except for our fellow Gardeners who we assume are in the same boat.
We hope you are as much of a fan as we are.

Garden news

We have made some progress on getting a deer fence! We hope work on that will start on Monday.
We would like to thank those thoughtful customers who shared their anti-pest tips and tricks with us. We will certainly be giving those a try too.
